Chrysler Sebring Convertible '96-'00, CODE 601 PCM {computer}

  1. 1996 Sebring LXI
    Hesitating (Misfiring) & sometimes stalling:
    2.5 L - 6 Cylinder
    VIN = 3C3EL55H1TT259374
Bought car new in Dec 1995, has 95484 miles…

Problems started out very intermittent but recently happening more frequently…
I have tried to solve this problem for over 2 years without luck.
Getting codes on Scanner Tool = Acteon ‘AutoScanner Plus’ - CP9580

P1391 = Lost of Camshaft crank
Info’ from Scanner Tool; what could cause this problem:
    1) Replaced Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)
    2) Replaced Distributor Assembly
    3) Replaced Flex Plate (fly wheel)**
    4) Repair CKP Sensor Connector
    5) Replaced Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

    Parts Replaced (in order):
    1) Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) (2 times) --- After 1st (aftermarket) sensor change; hesitation went away for about 1 year…
    2) After 2nd (CKP) sensor (Chrysler part); hesitation restarted after driving only a few miles…
    3) MAP Sensor & its connector --- At this time I was also getting code ‘P1296’ (No 5V to MAP Sensor) Hesitation restarted after driving about 30 miles (have not gotten this code P1296 since …
    4) Fuel pump --- Was recommend to change… Again hesitation started after a few miles….
    5) Distributor (Camshaft Sensor built in) with a new one aftermarket…
    6) Sparkplugs & their wires at the same time as the distributor was replaced; with no help…
    7) Powertrain Control Module (PCM) – Ran for a few miles then the problems come back very intermittent…

Also I have ohm-out wires (harness) from sensors to PCM; moving harness to see if there is an intermittent open, looked OK…

    Currently:
The car seams to hesitate more when:
    1) Moving from a slow to a faster speed or going uphill (engine under load) …
    2) Also accelerating from a stop…
    3) The ‘Check Engine Light’ does not come on all the time when the engine hesitates…
    3) When the engine does stalls-out (which intermittent) it did always restarts with no problems, but lately it is becoming harder to restart…
    4) More recently on occasions will get code P1296 along with P1391…
P1296 = No 5 Voltage to manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor
    Info’ from Scanner Tool:
    1) Replaced Manifold Absolute (Map) Sensor
    2) Replaced Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

**I cannot believe the Flex Plate would be the problem… What do you think?
Do you think it could be the timing Belt?

Since above comments have removed transmission and inspected flex plate saw no problem…
After getting car put back together problem (Hesitating, Misfiring, & Stalling) at first was infrequent but over time has become more frequent (warmer weather)…

    1. The timing belt could have jumped one tooth. That would give you all kinds of crazy problems that would be very hard to diagnose. Check the valve timing.

  2. If the timing belt has jumped, than I would think the problem would be all the time??? The car does run for a while without hesitating (misfiring) & sometimes stalling… Especially runs OK the first few miles after being parked overnight… Than after stopping to do some shopping it sometimes is hard to start… After restarting & driving, it than sometimes starts to have the problems… The hesitating (misfiring) & sometimes stalling will come and go… Lately without and engine warning light… Has the timing belt been a problem with this engine?

Is there a way to commutate with ‘iridium555’ directly and get his advice?

    1. It would be intermittent problems and do different things since the PCM will try to compensate for the off valve timing.
